The breath of summer at the gates of the Superba

There is a precise moment in Genoa when spring decides to give way to summer. It is not marked by the calendar, but by an imperceptible change of light on the slate roofs and the scent of salt air that becomes more intense, pushed by the breeze that rises the caruggi from the sea towards the hills. This late May weekend brings exactly this promise. It is the moment when the city shakes off the last uncertain warmth to embrace open-air living, evenings that stretch longer, and that irresistible desire to lose yourself among the squares and quays of the port.

If you have chosen to spend these days in the shadow of the Lanterna, an intense program of sensations awaits you. Genoa is never a city that reveals itself easily, but this weekend it seems to want to open its most precious treasures. From the crowded wharves of the Porto Antico, where the flavors of the world meet, to the austere and majestic aisles of the Cathedral explored in the silence of night, every corner of the historic center will vibrate with a particular energy.

Prepare yourself for an itinerary that requires no haste. Our advice, as always, is to let yourself be guided by curiosity. Wear comfortable shoes, because in Genoa you walk, you climb, you descend and you stop suddenly, captivated by an unexpected glimpse. Are you ready to discover what your Genoese adventure holds in store for you? Get comfortable, we are about to reveal the events that will make your stay unforgettable.

Street flavors and artistic visions between the Port and the Ducal Palace

Our weekend journey begins where the city meets its natural element: water. From May 29 to June 2, the Porto Antico area transforms into an immense and colorful crossroads of tastes with the tenth edition of the Street Food Fest 2026. Do not imagine the usual food fair: this year the central theme is “What Remains,” a fascinating invitation to reflect on the value of discarded ingredients, reinterpreted creatively by chefs and food artisans. Walking among the wharves redesigned by Renzo Piano, you can savor the essence of street food, which in Genoa has centuries-old roots in the ancient sciamadde and fried food shops of the city center.

The contrast between the modern architecture of the tent structures and the sparkling sea creates the backdrop for a complete sensory experience. We recommend arriving around sunset, when the sky takes on rosy hues and the air fills with spiced aromas and the unmistakable sound of perfectly fried food. It is the perfect moment to enjoy a cone of fish or an exotic specialty, sitting with your legs dangling over the wharves, watching the boats sway gently.

But in Genoa, nourishment is not only for the body. Walking up Via San Lorenzo, in just a few minutes you will find yourself facing the imposing structure of Palazzo Ducale, the beating heart of the city’s culture. Here, from May 29 to 31, The Genoeser Visual Days 2026 takes place. If you love illustration, design and visual arts, this is your ideal refuge. The festival, now in its second edition, explores the theme of “Perspectives”. And what better city than Genoa, built on impossible slopes and vertical viewpoints, to discuss perspectives?

The Ducale will come alive with exhibitions, masterclasses and installations featuring emerging and established artists. Take the time to explore the palace’s inner courtyards, let yourself be inspired by the displayed works and perhaps participate in one of the many organized workshops. Visual art has the power to tell the world without using words, and in this Genoese weekend you will find countless drawn stories ready to be listened to with your eyes.

The music that unites: remembering Don Gallo in the square

If there is an event that captures the deepest, most solidarity-driven and proudly rebellious soul of Genoa, it is the one that will animate Piazza Matteotti on the evening of Saturday, May 30. The Free concert for Don Gallo with Ex-Otago, Capossela and Willie Peyote is not simply a musical event, but a collective ritual. Don Andrea Gallo, the “priest of the forgotten,” left an indelible mark on the city’s social fabric, founding the Community of San Benedetto al Porto in 1970. His message of inclusion and welcome still resonates strongly in the caruggi.

The title of the event, “Tell me who you exclude and I’ll tell you who you are“, is a programmatic manifesto. The square will fill with Genoese of all ages, united by the desire to celebrate and remember a man who made solidarity his banner. National-caliber artists, deeply connected to these values, will take turns on stage. The overwhelming energy of Vinicio Capossela, the biting irony of Willie Peyote and the indie melodies of Ex-Otago, a true institution of the city’s music scene, will create an unforgettable soundtrack.

We invite you to mingle with the crowd, to experience the square not as mere spectators, but as part of a temporary community. It is in these moments that you understand the true essence of the Superba: a city that appears closed, protected by its mountains, but capable of extraordinary gestures of generosity and human warmth. Let yourself be swept away by the rhythm, sing, dance and breathe deeply the air of freedom that will fill the historic center.

Nocturnal mysteries and dancing by the sea

The Genoese night offers contrasting souls, capable of satisfying both those seeking mystery and spirituality and those desiring the unbridled energy of summer fun. For the former, Saturday evening, May 30, holds a rare and precious opportunity: the Cathedral of San Lorenzo Segreta: evening visit among treasures and climb to the towers. Imagine crossing the Cathedral’s gates when the city outside becomes silent. The facade with white and black stripes, typical of Ligurian Gothic, takes on an even more solemn appearance in the darkness.

The route will guide you through corners normally inaccessible. You will admire the Cappella del Battista, a masterpiece from the fifteenth century, and the magnificent wooden Choir of the presbytery. But the truly breathtaking moment will be the climb to the towers. You will climb step by step, surrounded by half-light and the ancient scent of stone, until you emerge at the summit. From up there, illuminated Genoa stretches at your feet like a carpet of fallen stars on earth, from the harbor to the forts that crown the hills. An experience that will make you feel like master of the night.

If your Saturday evening idea involves fast-paced rhythms and sea salt on your skin, Porto Antico has the answer ready. The Opening of Banano Tsunami with Samuel from Subsonica marks the official start of the summer season for one of the historic venues in Genoa’s nightlife scene. Banano Tsunami is an institution: a floating platform, surrounded by water, where generations of Genoese have danced until dawn.

Having Samuel on the turntables means guaranteeing yourself a DJ set of the highest level, a sonic journey that ranges from electronic to the hottest rhythms. The atmosphere will be electric, enriched by drag performances and the unmistakable energy of summer nights. You can dance under the stars, with the silhouette of the Lanterna in the distance and the reflection of lights on the dark water of the harbor. Two opposite but equally fascinating ways to experience the night in the Superba.

Sunday out and about: the sweet rhythms of the hinterland

After two days of intense urban exploration, Sunday is the ideal day to change perspective. Genoa is not just sea and narrow streets; behind it opens a green and lush hinterland, dotted with ancient villages and rural traditions. On May 31st we suggest you venture a few kilometers from the coast to reach the Valle Stura, where the thirtieth edition of the Strawberry Festival in Rossiglione takes place.

The journey to reach Rossiglione is already an experience in itself. Leaving behind the blue of the Mediterranean, you’ll venture into an Apennine landscape filled with chestnut forests, crystal-clear streams, and crisp air. The festival is a dive into authentic local culture: an entire day dedicated to the red fruit par excellence, grown with passion in the surrounding valleys. You’ll find market stalls of typical products, where you can buy not only strawberries, but also cheeses, honey, and local cured meats.

Attending a festival in the Ligurian hinterland means sitting at shared tables, listening to the local dialect echo among the stalls, and savoring the most genuine and rural side of this territory. It’s an excellent opportunity for families, thanks to the open spaces and related sporting events, but also for anyone who wants to unwind and enjoy the peace of a Sunday before heading back to the city.

Our hidden gem: a suspended coffee among the rooftops

Every respectable weekend needs a pause, a moment of suspension in which to reorganize your thoughts and emotions. As you move between events in the historic center, we suggest you look for the Art Deco elevator in Piazza Portello. Buy your ticket, step into this wooden cabin with frosted glass that smells of the early 1900s, and let yourself be transported upward through the bowels of the hill.

In a few seconds you’ll emerge at Spianata Castelletto, the most beloved “balcony” of Genoese people. Here, far from the noise of traffic, you can sit on a bench in the shade of tall trees or at the tables of one of the ancient ice cream parlors in the square. Order a coffee or, if the weather allows, the first granita of the season. Before you will open a 180-degree view of the entire old city, a sea of gray rooftops broken by bell towers and domes, gently sloping toward the blue of the harbor. It’s the perfect place to take a photograph with your mind, to capture the memory of your visit before you leave.
