A weekend between sea breeze and mountain fragrance
Genoese spring, when it arrives in the second half of May, possesses a particular light that defines the contours of everything. It is that moment of the year when the warmth of the sun invites you to remove your jacket mid-morning, while the breeze rising from the Ligurian Sea keeps the air clear and crisp. If you are planning your weekend in our city, you will quickly notice that Genoa in this season offers not only an enviable climate, but transforms into a vibrant stage where nature, culture and traditions meet in surprising ways.
The weekend from May 15 to 17, 2026 promises to be extraordinarily rich with opportunities. Forget about rushing and prepare yourself to walk, to listen, to taste and to observe. The Superb City asks you only a little curiosity to reveal its most fascinating contrasts: from the harbor docks where Mediterranean gardens flourish, to the Apennine ridges dominated by ancient military fortresses. It is an invitation to explore the verticality of a territory that never stops amazing you.
“You will see a royal city, nestled against an alpine hill, superb for its people and walls, whose mere appearance indicates it as the lady of the sea.”
— Francesco Petrarca, Itinerarium Syriacum (1358)
In this article we guide you through a carefully selected choice of the most interesting events, designed to let you savor the authentic essence of the territory. Whether you are travelers seeking unprecedented views or Genoese wanting to rediscover your own spaces, you will certainly find the perfect reason to leave home. And if you would like our guide to Genoa to deepen your knowledge of the neighborhoods, keep it within reach while planning your itinerary.
Flowers, sea and the nobility of the port: Yacht & Garden
Let us begin our journey by heading toward the sea, precisely at Marina Genova, in the western part of the city. From Friday 15 to Sunday 17 May returns Yacht & Garden 2026, an event that has now become a classic of the Ligurian spring. Imagine a stroll along sunny docks, where the blinding white of classical boat hulls blends with the intense colors of Mediterranean blooms. This is not a simple trade fair, but a true open-air exhibition and market dedicated to elegance.
With over one hundred and fifty carefully selected exhibitors, you can lose yourself among rare botanical collections, aromatic plants that release hints of helichrysum and rosemary, refined garden furnishings and pieces of naval antiques. It is the ideal opportunity to admire up close the art of master shipwrights and the knowledge of nursery experts, in a union that celebrates love for the sea and the land, two elements that have always shaped the character of our region.
We suggest dedicating at least a couple of hours to this event, perhaps stopping for an aperitif at sunset at one of the marina’s venues, observing the golden reflections on the water while the boats gently sway at their moorings. It is a perfect way to start your weekend with the slow and relaxed pace that breathes along the coast.
Climbing upward: historic forts and the mysteries of the caruggi
If the call of nature pushes you upward, Saturday May 16 offers a magnificent opportunity to discover the city’s seventeenth-century defensive system. The excursion The middle forts: Diamante, Due Fratelli and Puin will take you walking along the ridges that separate the valleys of the Polcevera and Bisagno rivers. Starting from Parco del Peralto, you will immerse yourself in a harsh and evocative landscape, climbing the ancient neviera path up to Sella del Diamante.

The effort of the climb will be more than repaid by the sweeping panoramas that span from the Maritime Alps to Corsica on the clearest days. Reaching the mighty walls of Forte Diamante, which dominates the valley with its star-shaped architecture, or admiring the recently restored Forte Puin, means touching the military history of a Republic that had to defend its independence. To crown the effort, the walk concludes with a well-deserved rustic dinner at Osteria delle Baracche, to recover your strength with the honest flavors of the hinterland.
If instead you prefer urban atmospheres but don’t want to give up walking, still on Saturday 16 Taroccando pe Zena awaits you. This fascinating urban trekking transforms the maze of caruggi into a symbolic map of the Major Arcana of the Tarot. Guided by experts, you will explore hidden squares and slate portals of the historic center searching for esoteric meanings and forgotten legends. An unusual and intriguing way to look at the monuments we think we know in a completely different light.
The taste of the hinterland: the Sussisa Festival
There is no respectable Ligurian weekend without a moment dedicated to good food and local gastronomic traditions. Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May we suggest you move slightly eastward, to the heights of the Golfo Paradiso, to reach the hamlet of Sussisa, in the municipality of Sori. Here takes place the Focaccia with Cheese Festival, a celebration that honors one of the most iconic and beloved products of our territory.

Nestled among olive groves and terraced slopes overlooking the sea, Sussisa offers the authentic atmosphere of Ligurian village festivals. Under the tents set up for the occasion, you can taste the famous focaccia, characterized by two very thin layers of unleavened dough enclosing a melted and creamy heart of fresh cheese. The uniqueness of this festival also lies in the surprise toppings proposed by the organizers, who accompany the traditional recipe with imaginative and delicious variations.
The atmosphere will be warmed by live music, DJ sets and entertainment for all ages. Sitting at long wooden tables, sharing food with those beside you and listening to the cheerful voices speaking in dialect is an experience that will make you feel an integral part of the community. For those who love genuine flavors, this is an absolutely unmissable stop for your weekend.
Musical drama and civic engagement in the square
Returning to the beating heart of Genoa, Friday evening May 15 (with performances through May 24) marks the return of grand opera. At the Teatro Carlo Felice, Giuseppe Verdi’s Macbeth takes the stage in the 1865 Paris version, directed by Fabio Ceresa and conducted by Sesto Quatrini. Attending a Verdi opera in Genoa always has a special flavor: the great composer from Busseto loved our city deeply, so much so that he chose its center as his seasonal residence for decades — first at Palazzo Sauli in Carignano from 1866, then, from November 1874, in the magnificent Palazzo Doria in Fassolo, where he spent the winter months until the last years of his life, while always maintaining Villa Verdi in Sant’Agata as his primary residence.

This production will transport you into the dark atmospheres of Shakespearean tragedy. The intrigues of the court, the witches’ prophecies and the consuming ambition of the protagonists come to life through a musical score of extraordinary emotional power, with George Gagnidze in the role of Macbeth and Jennifer Rowley as Lady Macbeth. It’s an opportunity to put on your best clothes and let yourself be wrapped in the magic of theater, in one of the most prestigious cultural institutions of the city.
With a completely different register, but equally significant for the vitality of the city, Saturday May 16 Piazza De Ferrari will host the ColorataCena 2026 on the occasion of the international day against homophobic, lesbian, bisexual and transphobic violence. Around the monumental bronze fountain, dozens of rainbow tables will be set up for a large open-air collective dinner. A moment of sharing, music and assertion of civil rights that will color the city’s main square, showing how Genoa knows how to be, now as in the past, a crossroads of cultures, tolerance and openness.
Our local gem: a ride on the Funicular
If you decide to take the excursion to the forts, or even just want to enjoy a breathtaking view of the city before dinner, we strongly recommend reaching Parco del Peralto using the historic Zecca-Righi Funicular. Forget your car and the traffic: enter the station hidden in Largo della Zecca and take a seat in the characteristic red cars.
The journey itself is an experience that every Genoese person carries in their heart. The funicular rises steeply, first winding through galleries carved into the rock, then emerging into sunlight, cutting vertically through the hillside neighborhoods. As you ascend, the noise of traffic fades, replaced by the metallic screech of the cables. Arriving at the Righi terminus, you’ll find yourself on Genoa’s most beautiful natural terrace, with the harbor spread at your feet and the air perfumed with maritime pines. It’s the perfect prelude to any evening.
