The call of a different Sunday

There is something in the air of a Ligurian Sunday morning that calls to adventure. The sun caresses the half-closed shutters, the scent of salt spray rises from the harbor, and that familiar sensation — almost a sweet urgency — whispers that it is time to move. Not toward destinations already seen a thousand times, not along paths worn by mass tourism, but toward that corner of the Riviera that still preserves the authentic soul of maritime Liguria.

Just seventy-five minutes by train from Genoa to discover the best-kept secret of Cinque Terre: Levanto is not just the hidden sixth pearl, but the smartest access key to this UNESCO World Heritage site. While thousands of hikers crowd the trails between Monterosso and Riomaggiore, those who know Levanto understand that the sea offers a completely different — and decidedly more relaxing — perspective on these legendary villages.

The village unfolds gradually from the train window: first the hills covered with terraced vineyards, then the bell tower peeking between slate roofs, finally the perfect embrace of the bay with its golden beach and waves that attract surfers from all over Europe. Levanto is this: a perfect balance between maritime tradition and contemporary spirit, between genuine quiet and accessible adventure.

A village that lives by the sea and the wind

Stepping out at Levanto station means immediately entering the rhythm of a town that has never stopped being itself. Via del Mercato leads straight to the heart of the village: pastel-colored houses alternate with historic shops, family-run trattorias smell of salted anchovies and basil that grows more intense here than anywhere else. There is no rush in Levanto, no commercial tension that often afflicts destinations too heavily trodden by tourism.

The medieval loggia of the Town Hall dominates the main square with its sober elegance, while the castle — or what remains of it — tells of when Levanto was an independent maritime republic, before falling under Genoese influence. But it is toward the sea that the gaze inevitably runs: that semicircular bay, protected by two rocky headlands, has something magical about it in the early morning hours, when fishermen return with full nets and surfers check the sea conditions.

The main beach, nearly two kilometers long, is an unexpected luxury on this coast of cliffs. Fine sand and pebbles alternate creating spots for every need: families with children near the waterfront, surfers toward Punta Levanto where the waves are more consistent, and solitary contemplators who choose the rocks to observe the horizon. This is the true character of Levanto: inclusive without being chaotic, authentic without being museum-like.

The smart alternative: Cinque Terre from the sea

This is where Levanto reveals its true strategic value. While the trails of Cinque Terre often seem like pedestrian highways during the central summer months — with endless queues between Monterosso and Vernazzo and mandatory reservations for the Lover’s Trail — the sea offers a completely different perspective on these iconic villages.

Every morning, boats of the Consorzio Marittimo 5 Terre depart from Levanto’s harbor, as well as smaller vessels managed by fishing families who have transformed their maritime skills into a quality tourist service. The difference is substantial: instead of sweating while walking among crowds of tourists on narrow paths, you relax on the deck of a boat while the coast of Cinque Terre unfolds in its full beauty.

From this perspective, the villages reveal details invisible from the mainland: the houses of Monterosso that seem to open directly onto the sea, the vineyards of Vernazza that plunge steeply down to the rocks, the church of San Lorenzo in Manarola that dominates the cliff from above, dotted with colorful boats. And then there is the intimacy of the landings: stepping off the boat directly into the small harbor of Vernazzo, without having walked for hours, offers a sense of discovery that mass trekking has long since lost.

But the most authentic experience is the swimming stops: the captain knows hidden coves, crevices where the water is crystal clear and the rock plunges into the blue. Here you understand why this stretch of coast has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site: not only for the villages, but for the marine ecosystem that sustains them, for that thousand-year-old relationship between man and sea that from the boat you perceive in all its intensity.

How to organize the perfect day

The ideal itinerary departs very early from Genoa. The first regional train at 7:15 from Stazione Principe arrives in Levanto at 8:30: just enough time for a station bar breakfast — a warm croissant and frothy cappuccino — while you observe the village awakening.

By 9:00 you’re already at the harbor to choose the right excursion. The classic tours of the Maritime Consortium last 6 to 8 hours and include stops at Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. But for those seeking a more intimate experience, it’s worth seeking out smaller boats: vessels carrying 10-12 people guided by captains who know every reef on this coast. The price is slightly higher — around €45-60 versus €35 for group tours — but the quality of the experience is incomparable.

The alternative for the more adventurous is kayak rental: Levanto has several centers that rent equipment and organize guided tours. Paddling to Monterosso requires good physical fitness but offers a unique perspective on the Cinque Terre villages. For those who prefer to stay on the surface, stand-up paddling is a more relaxing but equally evocative option.

Lunch deserves a precise strategy. If you’ve chosen the boat tour, each Cinque Terre village offers restorative stops, but prices reflect the tourist destination. Better to return to Levanto for lunch: the focaccia from Recco at Nessun Dorma (the very one that inspired the restaurant of the same name in Manarola), spaghetti with fresh clams at Il Timone overlooking the harbor, or mussels stuffed according to the Levanto recipe at Moresco restaurant in the ancient noble palace.

The afternoon is the right time to explore Levanto on foot. A walk along the promontory trails offers breathtaking views: the Sentiero del Mesco path leads in one hour to the ruins of the Abbey of Sant’Antonio and a medieval watchtower. From here, the view of the Cinque Terre at sunset is worth the entire journey.

The detail that makes the trip worthwhile

There is a corner of Levanto that few know about, even among those who regularly visit the village. Behind the church of San Siro, following via San Siro towards the cemetery, a dirt path opens up that in ten minutes leads to the Chapel of San Giacomo. It’s not marked on guides, doesn’t appear in tourist itineraries, but this small 13th-century oratory houses perfectly preserved medieval frescoes and above all a view of the Cinque Terre that takes your breath away.

From here, on the clearest days, you can distinctly see all five villages: a procession of colorful houses dotting the coastline to the horizon. It’s Levanto’s secret photo spot, the one locals pass down to each other but passing tourists never discover. The silence is absolute, interrupted only by the sound of waves and wind through the olive trees.

How to get there and get around

The train remains the most practical way to reach Levanto from Genoa. The Genoa-La Spezia line is well served: regional trains every hour with travel times ranging from 1h15 to 1h45 depending on stops. The ticket costs around 8 euros and can be purchased at machines or with the Trenitalia app.

For those traveling by car, the A12 highway has a dedicated exit “Carrodano-Levanto” approximately 90 km from Genoa. The route crosses spectacular tunnels and viaducts, but be careful: on summer weekends traffic can slow down significantly. Parking in Levanto is paid and often full — it’s better to book one of the covered parking areas in the center online.

Once in Levanto, everything is within walking distance. The village is small, the trails are well marked, and the station is just 300 meters from the harbor. For those who want to explore the surrounding area, the local bus service connects Levanto with inland villages, but there are limited routes — check the schedules at the station.

The return: when Genoa welcomes you back

The last train to Genoa departs from Levanto at 21:47 — just enough time for a sunset aperitivo on the waterfront and a light dinner before heading back. On the return journey, as the coast passes by in the darkness dotted with lights from villages, you reflect on the day with that special satisfaction that authentic discoveries bring.

Returning to the residences of Genoa’s historic center after a day in Levanto means carrying with you the taste of clean sea, the scent of real basil, the feeling of having seen Cinque Terre from a privileged perspective. This is the advantage of choosing Genoa as your base: every day can bring a new discovery, every weekend can turn into a small adventure. And in the evening, among the silent caruggi, you always have the certainty of being back home.

If authentic Liguria is calling you, if you’re looking for the smartest way to experience Cinque Terre without sacrificing comfort and authenticity, our residences in the heart of Genoa await you. Because every great discovery always starts from a safe, welcoming base, rich in the history that only Genoese people know how to tell with passion.
