Genoa is a city that surprises families. Those who arrive with children, fearing an overly cultural destination, quickly discover that the city offers a range of child-friendly experiences that few other Italian cities can match. The Aquarium — the largest in Europe — is just the beginning.

The Aquarium and Porto Antico: the perfect day

The Aquarium of Genoa is the number one attraction for families. Seventy tanks, over twelve thousand animals, interactive pathways: a complete visit requires at least three hours. Dolphins, penguins and sharks are the undisputed stars, but don’t underestimate the touch tank where children can touch the rays. Book online: save money and skip the queue that in high season exceeds an hour. AcquarioVillage tickets also include the Children’s City, the Biosphere and the Bigo.

The Children’s and Young People’s City, in Porto Antico, is an interactive museum divided by age groups (2-3, 3-5, 6-12 years) with workshops on science, technology and sensory perception. Perfect for rainy days. The Bigo by Renzo Piano takes visitors to forty meters in height: children love the sensation of flying over the city.

The Aquarium of Genoa is not only the largest in Italy but was designed from the start as a place of education and wonder for young visitors. The route winds through 70 tanks that recreate marine ecosystems from around the world: from the coral reefs of the Red Sea to the rainforest of Madagascar, from the icy waters of Antarctica to the depths of the Mediterranean. Children can touch rays in the touch tank, watch dolphins being fed and take part in educational workshops held every weekend — an experience that transforms a tourist visit into an unforgettable science lesson.

Next to the Aquarium, the Children’s and Young People’s City is an experience museum designed for ages 2-12, with interactive pathways on science, technology and nature where children learn through play. The Bigo, Renzo Piano’s panoramic elevator that rotates up to 40 meters in height, is another must-see attraction: the view from above of the harbor and the city takes everyone’s breath away.

Child-friendly museums

The Galata Museum of the Sea is the most engaging museum for children. The reconstruction of a Genoese galley, where they can climb aboard and steer the helm, is unforgettable. The Nazario Sauro submarine — a real visitable submarine — appeals to children from age six and up. The D’Albertis Castle in Castelletto seems straight out of an adventure book: a neo-Gothic castle full of African masks and exotic objects. The ride up with the panoramic elevator is itself an adventure. The Museum of Natural History fascinates young nature and dinosaur enthusiasts.

The Galata Museum of the Sea offers a family-friendly route that allows you to board a full-scale reconstructed Genoese galley, explore the cabin of an emigrant ocean liner and visit the Nazario Sauro submarine — a claustrophobic and fascinating experience that young people adore. The Giacomo Doria Museum of Natural History, a short walk from Brignole, houses a collection of stuffed animals, fossils and minerals that capture the attention of curious children, with interactive temporary exhibitions that change every season.

Outdoors: parks, beaches and adventures

The Nervi Parks are a family paradise: nine hectares of gardens where you can run, climb centuries-old trees and feed the fish in the ponds. The Nervi promenade is also suitable for strollers. The Righi Adventure Park offers treetop routes with Tibetan bridges and zip-lines. It is reached by the Zecca-Righi funicular, which children love. The most child-friendly beaches are Voltri and Pegli to the west, with sandy bottoms. For those staying in our properties in Boccadasse, the cove is perfect for older children.

Genoa surprises families with its hidden green spaces too. The Parks of Nervi, four historic villas connected by a single scenic promenade overlooking the sea, offer kilometers of safe trails where children can run freely among rose gardens and English lawns. In spring, the Euroflora, held right here, transforms the parks into an enchanted garden that fascinates both adults and children.

For families with more adventurous children, Forte Begato and the Genoese forts in the Parco delle Mura represent a unique experience: ancient fortifications reachable by walks through greenery with 360-degree views of the city and sea. The route is also suitable for strollers on most of the path, and equipped picnic areas can be found along the way.

Don’t miss the Città dei Bambini e dei Ragazzi at Porto Antico, Italy’s largest experiential space dedicated to children aged 2-12, with over 90 interactive installations ranging from science to technology, water to light. Children can touch, experiment, and play in an environment designed to stimulate curiosity.

Eating out with children in Genoa

Genoese cuisine is perfect for children: trofie al pesto, fried focaccette, farinata, focaccia. The sciamadde — the fried food stalls in the caruggi — are perfect for a quick lunch: panissa, frisceu, filled focaccette. Children choose from the counter. Sa Pesta on Via dei Giustiniani and the Sciamadda on Via San Giorgio are the most authentic. Many Genoese restaurants are family-friendly without needing to advertise it.

Genoa is a surprisingly family-friendly city when it comes to eating out. Focaccia bakeries serve portions tailored to size at affordable prices, trattorias in the caruggi offer simple menus with pesto pasta and cotolettes, and covered markets like the MOG at Mercato Orientale offer a wide choice of different cuisines that please even the pickiest eaters. A tip for parents: Genoa’s quintessential afternoon snack is Recco focaccia with cheese, which children love for its stretchy texture and delicate flavor.

Getting around with children

The metro, buses, cable cars, and public elevators make Genoa accessible with strollers. The Castelletto elevator offers a panoramic view that seems like a spaceship to children. The Casella train is a must: a narrow-gauge railway from Piazza Manin to Casella, about an hour through bridges, tunnels, and hillside landscapes. In Casella, have a picnic in the woods and return on the afternoon train.

“Genoa is a vertical city where children can ride on cable cars, elevators, and rack railways as if they were amusement park rides”

Day trips

The Acquapark Le Caravelle in Ceriale, about an hour by train away, is Liguria’s water park. A boat trip from Genoa to Camogli, San Fruttuoso and Portofino is a mini-cruise that children absolutely love.

A practical tip for families: Genoa offers the Genoa Museums card which includes access to over 20 museums and discounts on attractions such as the Aquarium and the Bigo panoramic lift. For children under 12, admission is often free or discounted. Planning your visit by purchasing this card allows you to save significantly, especially if you plan to visit multiple attractions over two or three days, making the Genoa experience accessible and convenient for the whole family.

Final tips for families

Our properties in Genoa are ideal for families: apartments with kitchen, washing machine and plenty of space, much more comfortable than a hotel with children. We can provide cots, high chairs and personalized advice. The most important tip: don’t pack your day too full. Leave room for the unexpected — a cat in the caruggi, an impromptu gelato, an unplanned dip — and your vacation will be memorable.
