There’s a widespread misconception among those unfamiliar with Liguria: thinking that Genoa is a port city without notable beaches. The reality is quite different. Genoa stretches for over thirty kilometers along the coast, and within its territory and immediate surroundings you’ll find beaches of every kind — hidden coves between the rocks, equipped lidos, historic establishments with saltwater pools, free beaches with views of a Mediterranean that on certain mistral days reaches an almost Caribbean blue.

Boccadasse: the most photogenic urban beach

The cove of Boccadasse is Genoa’s most famous beach. It’s not large — just a few dozen meters of pebbles and gravel — but the setting makes it unique: the colorful houses of the fishing village reflected in the water, boats pulled ashore, the coastline fading toward the east. In summer it fills with Genoese people taking their lunch break. The seabed is rocky and drops off quickly: bring your reef shoes. You can reach it from the center by bus in ten minutes or with a walk along Corso Italia.

“Genoa’s sea has a color all its own, which is neither blue nor green, but a deep turquoise that changes with the light”

— Eugenio Montale, Cuttlefish Bones

The small bay of Boccadasse is much more than a beach: it is a place of the Genoese soul. In summer the pebbles fill with families and students who come to dive into crystal-clear water, while fishermen pull their nets ashore as they have done for centuries. The village surrounding it, with its pastel-colored houses nestled together, has been painted by generations of artists and photographed by millions of tourists, yet it retains an authenticity that postcards fail to capture.

Corso Italia: the seafront with historic establishments

Corso Italia is Genoa’s seafront — almost three kilometers of promenade between Foce and Boccadasse — and along its length you’ll find several historic bathing establishments. Bagni San Nazaro has a saltwater pool and terraces on the rocks. These establishments are built on the cliffs, with stairs descending into the water. Bathing on the rocks has a more authentic flavor than lounging on sand. For those staying at our residences in Foce-Brignole, Corso Italia is within walking distance.

The historic baths of Corso Italia — from Vittoria to San Nazaro, from Lido to Sporting — are not simply beach establishments but Genoese social institutions. Here families have rented the same cabin for generations, children learn to swim in saltwater pools and elderly people play cards under umbrellas. The promenade that connects them is the daily theater of Genoese life: morning runners, couples arm-in-arm at sunset, groups of friends stopping for ice cream as the sun sets behind the Lanterna.

Vernazzola: the secret cove

Few tourists know about Vernazzola, and the Genoese who frequent it would prefer it to stay that way. It’s a small natural inlet between Boccadasse and Sturla, reached by descending a staircase from the coastal road. The beach is pebbly, the water is crystal-clear and human presence is minimal. There are no facilities but the feeling of having found a secret corner of the city is worth the descent. Perfect for snorkeling: rocky seabeds full of life just minutes from the center.

Vernazzola is perhaps the beach most beloved by Genoese residents, a small natural amphitheater nestled between Sturla and Quinto. The peculiarity of this cove is its seabed that slopes gently, making it suitable for children as well. The water here is particularly clear thanks to currents arriving from the Portofino promontory. In the summer months a small kiosk on the beach offers focaccia and drinks, maintaining the informal and authentic atmosphere that Genoese people prefer.

For those seeking a different experience, the natural pools of Nervi — the so-called “Capolungo cliffs” — offer the chance to swim in rocky pools carved by the sea, with crystal-clear water and varying depths. Reachable from the Anita Garibaldi promenade, these natural pools are a secret passed down among Genoese and represent a fascinating alternative to traditional beaches, especially on days with rough seas when waves fill the pools with fresh water.

Nervi: natural pools and flat rocks

The Nervi area offers a unique beach experience. Beneath the Anita Garibaldi promenade, the cliff forms natural pools and rock platforms where Genoese people have been sunbathing for generations. Access is free. The water in Nervi is among the cleanest on the Genoese coast. The Marinella establishment offers a structured alternative with loungers and a bar. For those wanting to combine culture and sea, the combination of promenade-parks-museums-swimming is unbeatable.

The natural pools of Nervi are a geological marvel: the sea has carved perfect pools in the rock where the water is transparent and warm like an outdoor spa. Genoese people know them one by one — the Marinella, the Porticciolo, the rocks beneath the Anita Garibaldi promenade — and each has its regular visitors who have frequented it for decades. Those seeking a more adventurous experience can walk along the cliff to Bogliasco, alternating stretches of trail with dives into hidden coves accessible only by sea or on foot.

Camogli and San Fruttuoso: excursions like dreams

Camogli, reachable in thirty minutes by train, has a pebble beach at the foot of the colorful village, among the most beautiful in Liguria. From Camogli boats depart for San Fruttuoso, reachable only by sea or on foot through the Portofino Park. The tenth-century Benedictine abbey stands on the beach, and at seventeen meters depth on the seabed sits the statue of the Christ of the Abyss. The Camogli-San Fruttuoso excursion is a perfect day trip that can be organized from our residences in Genoa.

Bogliasco and Sori: villages to the east

Continuing beyond Nervi, in just a few minutes by train you reach Bogliasco and Sori, two fishing villages with small but delightful beaches. The advantage is the proximity: in fifteen minutes you’re out of the city, in villages where the pace is that of the riviera. Tickets cost just a few euros and you can decide at the last moment.

Pegli and Voltri: western Genoa

West of the city, Pegli and Voltri offer the widest beaches in the Genoese area. Voltri has a spacious beach with a coastal park, ideal for families with small children. Pegli is reachable in just a few minutes by train. Not to be missed, after swimming, Villa Durazzo-Pallavicini with one of the most beautiful historic gardens in Italy.

Whether you choose a beach facility or a wild cove, Genoa’s sea always holds surprises: clear waters, seabeds rich with life, and sunsets that tint the coast orange and pink on summer evenings.

Practical tips for swimming in Genoa

The bathing season runs from June to mid-September, with sea temperatures peaking in August (25-26 degrees). The best days are those with maestrale wind — the wind cleans the water and makes it crystal clear. Water shoes are essential on most Genoa beaches. For those staying in our accommodations in Genoa, we’re available to suggest the best beach of the day.

A fundamental tip for those unfamiliar with Genoa’s beaches: bring water shoes. Unlike the sandy shores of Rimini or Versilia, here the seabeds are rocky and pebbles can be slippery. In return, the water is incomparably clearer: just a mask and snorkel are enough to discover seabeds rich with seagrass, sea urchins, starfish and schools of bream and sea breams swimming just a few meters from the shore.

To avoid crowds on summer weekends, the local trick is to arrive early: at eight in the morning the free beaches are still half-empty and the water is as flat as a mirror. Those who prefer beach clubs should be careful to book in advance on weekends in July and August, when demand far exceeds supply.
