Genova Piazza Principe Station — the railway hub for western Genoa

Genova Piazza Principe is Genoa’s main railway gateway for arrivals from the west, with roughly 66,000 travellers a day and 24 million a year: the eleventh-busiest station in Italy. It faces Piazza Acquaverde, opposite the Stazione Marittima (Genoa’s cruise and ferry terminal) and a stone’s throw from the Rolli palaces of Via Balbi. Served by the Frecciabianca Turin-Rome, Intercity and Regional trains, it is also the terminus of the Volabus airport shuttle, of Flixbus national and international coaches, of the Montegalletto Lift to Castello d’Albertis, and of the western terminus of the underground.

Where it is

The main entrance is on Piazza Acquaverde, 16134 Genoa, and takes up the north side of Via Andrea Doria. This is the Prè district, hard against the western side of the old town, five minutes on foot from the Stazione Marittima — which makes Principe the natural arrival point for anyone reaching Genoa by sea.

The station unfolds on several levels: the outdoor forecourt with the surface rail platforms, the mezzanine with the ticket offices and services, and Principe Sotterranea (the underground level) with two through tracks dedicated to trains that cross Genoa without stopping at the upper level. The underground link with Brignole was opened in 1993.

Tracks and rail services

Principe has 10 surface platforms (numbered 11 to 20 — the first ten are assigned to Brignole), of which track 19 is a western terminating bay and 16 has no platform (for operational use). On a typical day around 300 trains pass through.

Principe is one of the densest intermodal nodes in Italy. On leaving the train you can, within a few minutes, board:

• Genoa Underground — Principe station. In 15 minutes to the eastern terminus at Brignole, passing through Acquario (Darsena/San Giorgio), Sarzano/Sant’Agostino and De Ferrari
• Volabus — terminus on Piazza Acquaverde. 30 minutes to Cristoforo Colombo Airport. Ticket €6 at the kiosk, €5 online, including 60 minutes on the AMT network
• Flixbus — main stop on Piazza Acquaverde (in front of the station colonnade) + alternative stop at Fanti d’Italia in the coach station
• AMT buses: terminus of the urban lines 7 (Val Bisagno), 20 (Val Polcevera), 32 and 33

Inside the station

Principe is a station-within-a-city: Trenitalia ticket offices and self-service machines, waiting rooms, left luggage with extended hours, newsagents, bars, fast food, a pharmacy and other services. The commercial area under the porticoes of Via Andrea Doria offers further outlets. Numerous lifts and escalators ensure accessibility.

How to get to Principe

• By car: Genova Ovest motorway exit (A7/A10/A12) → follow signs for Stazione Principe / the port. FS Park Principe (284 spaces, see the listing) and the Marina Porto Antico car park are nearby
• From the airport: direct Volabus (30 min, €6), taxi flat fare €7/person for a minimum of 3 passengers, or €25 flat fare for a single-car booking
• From the port: Ferry Terminal and Cruise Terminal 5-10 minutes on foot
• From the old town: Principe underground station → 1 stop from Darsena (10 minutes on foot from the Aquarium)

Why you end up here

Principe is the right choice if you are heading for the western old town, Porto Antico, Via Garibaldi or Prè, for hotels on Via Balbi or Sottoripa, and for visits to the Galata Museum of the Sea and the Aquarium. It is also the natural station for anyone continuing by ship (Ferry Terminal for Sardinia, Sicily, Tunisia, Morocco) or cruise (Cruise Terminal).

If, on the other hand, you are heading east (Corso Italia, Boccadasse, Albaro, Nervi), it may be worth staying on to Brignole without getting off — many trains stop at both stations, and 6-8 extra minutes on board save you a ride on the underground.

History — from the nineteenth century to the Belle Époque

Principe opened in 1854 as the station of the Turin-Genoa railway inaugurated that year, the first line of the Kingdom of Sardinia to reach the sea. The original building was much more modest than today’s: the monumental rebuilding took place in 1860-1865 in the form we still know, and was extended between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

The neoclassical façade on Piazza Acquaverde is in dialogue with the monument to Christopher Columbus that has occupied the centre of the square since 1862. It is one of the emblematic images of Belle Époque Genoa: the arrival of the first rail travellers and then of the transatlantic liners, all concentrated within the same three hundred metres of platforms and piers.

What’s nearby

Stepping out of Principe puts you straight in the centre of western Genoa. Within a few steps you find:

• Piazza Acquaverde with its monument to Columbus
• Via Balbi (UNESCO): the Royal Palace, the Palace of the University, the Montegalletto Lift
• Via Prè: the most working-class and historically popular alley of the centre, with focaccerie (focaccia bakeries, the Genoese hot-bread speciality) and old-fashioned shops
• Stazione Marittima: early-twentieth-century architecture, cruise and ferry terminal 300 metres away
• Commenda di Prè (San Giovanni di Prè): the medieval church of the Knights of Saint John
• Galata Museum of the Sea: 10 minutes on foot along the Darsena

If you have time before a train, a stroll along Sottoripa for farinata (a thin chickpea pancake baked in a copper pan, a Genoese staple) or up Via Balbi to admire the UNESCO Rolli façades is always a good idea. The Montegalletto Lift, 200 metres from the exit, is an experience in itself: in a few minutes it carries you up onto the Montegalletto hill, where you will find Castello d’Albertis with its exotic park and panoramic belvedere.

Principe or Brignole, which is closer to the old town?
They are practically equidistant by underground (4-5 stops). On foot Principe is closer to the Porto Antico and Via Garibaldi; Brignole is closer to Via XX Settembre and Piazza De Ferrari.

Does the Frecciarossa also stop at Principe?
Yes, many Trenitalia Frecce stop at both Principe and Brignole. Always check the timetable, since some stop at only one of the two.

Can I get to the airport from here?
