The trail from Camogli to San Fruttuoso, on foot through the Portofino Park

One of Liguria’s best-loved hikes connects Camogli to the abbey of San Fruttuoso across the Portofino Promontory. A panoramic route through maritime pines, Mediterranean scrub and sheer sea views, ending with the descent to the bay otherwise reachable only by sea.

The route

The classic path starts from Camogli and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. It is well marked but demanding, especially on the final descent to the abbey. A shorter variant also starts from Portofino (about 1 hour and 15 minutes). The trail crosses the protected area of the Portofino Park: proper footwear and enough water are recommended.

Planning your visit

Anyone choosing the trek must plan the return: on foot before sunset, or by sea with the Golfo Paradiso ferries from San Fruttuoso to Camogli. Boat services are more frequent in summer and reduced in winter.

Where it is

The most convenient starting point from Genoa is Camogli, reachable by train in about 35 minutes on the Genoa-La Spezia line.
