At dawn, when mist rises from the Tigullio Gulf and the first eastern light tints the still-calm waters with gold, Genoa’s sea reveals its most secret nature. Beneath the surface that reflects the colorful palaces of Boccadasse, hides a world few know: meadows of posidonia undulating like submerged grain fields, red gorgonians opening like fans on rocky seabeds, brown groupers guarding thousand-year-old crevices. It is the sea of divers, the one that doesn’t settle for floating but wants to descend, explore, breathe through the regulator the ancient rhythm of the depths.

This is not the postcard-sea of tourist brochures. It is the sea of those who know how to look beyond the surface, of those who understand that Liguria safeguards underwater treasures equal to those it displays on land. A vertical sea, where cliffs continue underwater in spectacular walls, where Mediterranean biodiversity finds refuge in protected marine areas that are true underwater sanctuaries.

From the terrace of our properties overlooking the sea, one often sees silvery bubbles rising to the surface: they are the divers returning from their explorations, carrying in their eyes visions that only a privileged few know. Genoa, a city of the sea par excellence, offers its guests the possibility of living the most intimate relationship with the blue element: that of those who immerse themselves completely in it.

The Portofino Sanctuary: Submerged Cathedral of the Ligurian Sea

The Portofino Marine Protected Area is the most precious gem of Ligurian diving, a marine ecosystem that extends over 346 hectares of surface and descends to 40 meters of depth. Here, where the Portofino promontory plunges into the sea with breathtaking vertical walls, a biodiversity concentrates that has few equals in the western Mediterranean.

The meadows of posidonia oceanica, the true lungs of the Ligurian Sea, extend like submerged savannas between 15 and 35 meters of depth. These “forests of the sea” produce more oxygen than the Amazon rainforest and host over 400 different species. Swimming over a posidonia meadow is like flying over an alien forest: the long ribbon-shaped leaves sway in the current, creating plays of light and shadow that mesmerize even the most experienced diver.

“These waters are an open book on Mediterranean history. Every dive here is a journey through geological time.”

— Mario Schiaffino, marine biologist and diving guide from Portofino

But it is between 20 and 35 meters that Portofino reveals its most thrilling spectacle: the red gorgonians. These arborescent corals, which can reach considerable dimensions, transform the seabeds into underwater gardens of rare beauty. Paramuricea clavata and Eunicella cavolini create colored forests where nudibranchs with psychedelic patterns hide, spirographs that retract at the slightest movement, blue damselfish that swim in compact schools like animated clouds.

The brown groupers, undisputed rulers of these seabeds, can exceed one and a half meters in length. Long-lived and territorial animals, they have learned to coexist with divers, often allowing close encounters that create unforgettable emotions. It is not uncommon to meet specimens that local diving centers have baptized with proper names, true underwater celebrities that experienced divers know how to recognize by their scars and physical characteristics.

The Paraggi Shallows: The Hidden Reef of the Riviera

A few hundred meters from the famous Paraggi beach, a secret lies hidden under 18-25 meters of water: the shallows, rock formations that emerge from the sandy seabed like submerged islands. This particular environment, where rocky and sandy seabed meet, creates a unique habitat that attracts particularly varied fauna.

The Paraggi shallows represent an ideal dive for intermediate-level divers. The current here is generally moderate, visibility often excellent, especially in the spring months when the waters are cleaner and colder. The rock formations are colonized by encrusting sponges with vivid colors: the intense yellow of Cliona celata, the brilliant orange of Crambe crambe, the deep red of Petrosia ficiformis.

But it is the fish fauna that makes the shallows special. Here you can observe banded sea breams hunting among the rocks, gilt-head breams scrutinizing divers with suspicion, schools of damselfish moving like a perfect choreography. In the deeper crevices hide moray eels, whose bright eyes betray their presence even when their bodies remain hidden in rocky fissures.

During the summer months, when water temperature exceeds 24°C, it is not uncommon to encounter more thermophilic species: greater amberjacks in transit, dentex passing through, and occasionally even the occasional sunfish that approaches the coast following currents rich in jellyfish.

Noli and the Wreck of the Motor Ship Jolly Nero: Submerged History

About 12 nautical miles from Genoa, off the coast of Noli, lies one of the most fascinating wrecks of the Ligurian Sea: the motor ship Jolly Nero, which sank in 1990. This 80-meter cargo ship rests on the sandy seabed at 42 meters depth, representing a technical dive reserved for the most experienced divers, but also a journey into contemporary maritime history.

Over more than thirty years, the wreck has transformed into an artificial reef of extraordinary beauty. The metal superstructure has been colonized by encrusting organisms that have created a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes. Serpulidae build their calcareous tubes on the metal sheets, creating natural sculptures of rare elegance. Perforated sponges bore through the metal with millennial patience, while bryozoan colonies embroider living lace on every available surface.

Diving on the wreck requires an Advanced certificate and preferably experience in deep dives. The current can be challenging and the depth does not forgive air management errors. But for those with adequate skills, exploring the decks, holds and bridge of the Jolly Nero is an experience that remains imprinted in the diver’s memory.

“O mâ o l’è sempre o mâ, ma sott’acqua o parla ‘na lengua diversa”

— Genoese proverb (The sea is always the sea, but underwater it speaks a different language)

The fauna populating the wreck is particularly rich: large groupers have settled in the holds, greater sea breams patrol the deck, while schools of silvery bogue create shimmering clouds around the superstructure. During night dives, the wreck comes alive with different life: octopuses emerge from their lairs to hunt, while crabs run across the metal decks in a silent ballet illuminated only by the light of underwater torches.

Diving Centers: Expert Guides to Explore the Ligurian Depths

The quality of Ligurian diving depends not only on the beauty of the seabeds, but also on the professionalism of the diving centers operating along the coast. From Genoa to Portofino, from Camogli to Sestri Levante, a network of authorized diving centers offers services for all levels of experience, from first bubbles in the pool to the most demanding technical dives.

The diving centers of the Genoa Levant, particularly those in Nervi and Sori, represent the ideal gateway for those staying in our residences and wanting to discover the underwater world. These centers offer complete certification courses, from Open Water level to the most advanced specialties such as Deep Diving, Wreck Diving and Nitrox.

The diving season in Liguria has unique characteristics in the Mediterranean landscape. While in other destinations activity is concentrated in the summer months, here the best periods for visibility are spring and late autumn. From March to May and from October to November, when water temperature fluctuates between 16 and 20°C, visibility can reach 30-35 meters, exceptional conditions that allow you to fully appreciate the beauty of the seabeds.

During the summer, when the water exceeds 24°C, visibility decreases due to increased plankton presence and higher maritime traffic, but the probability of encounters with thermophilic species and occasional pelagic visitors increases. It is the ideal period for beginners, who can enjoy warmer waters and generally calmer marine conditions.

The most well-equipped diving centers also offer complete equipment rental services, essential for those traveling and unable to transport their own gear. Recommended wetsuits vary from 5mm in summer to 7mm in winter, when the water drops below 14°C but offers crystal-clear visibility and encounters with species that retreat to deeper waters in summer.

The Submerged Sea of the Genoese: A Passion Passed Down Through Generations

To truly understand Ligurian diving, you must know the Genoese who live it year-round, not just on tourist weekends. They are members of historic diving clubs like Genova Sub, founded in 1954, or the Club Subacqueo Genovese, which for decades have organized weekly outings on local seabeds. These “Sunday divers” know every crevice, every wall, every familiar fish on the local reefs.

Their routine is sacred: waking before dawn, coffee at the harbor bar, checking the marine weather forecast, loading air tanks onto the inflatable boat. Then the sea, always different yet always the same, welcoming these domestic explorers with the familiarity of a home living room. They know where to find the Dragon’s grouper at 28 meters, they know the cave where the giant octopus of Punta Chiappa hides, they remember exactly where to spot the rarest nudibranchs.

These local divers are the true custodians of Liguria’s submerged memory. They have witnessed climate change through the eyes of their masks: the arrival of tropical species like the Mediterranean parrotfish, the gradual disappearance of some cold-water species, variations in gorgonia blooming. Their testimonies are precious for understanding how the marine ecosystem evolves in the face of global changes.

During winter, when recreational divers abandon Liguria, they continue diving. With thicker wetsuits and a passion that knows no seasons, they explore deserted seabeds where nature reclaims its spaces. It is during these months that the most emotional encounters occur: schools of greater amberjack in transit, curious dolphins approaching divers, occasional sightings of rare species pushed by deep currents.

Practical Tips for the Perfect Dive

Planning a diving experience in Liguria requires some specific precautions related to the territory’s and local sea’s characteristics. The coastal conformation, characterized by promontories and inlets, creates very different marine microclimates even at short distances.

The ideal period for visibility is between March and May, when waters are still cold (16-18°C) but crystal clear, and between September and November, when the temperature remains pleasant (18-22°C) but the presence of summer plankton decreases. July and August, while offering warmer waters, often present reduced visibility and greater crowding at dive sites.

To reach the best diving sites, the ideal starting point is eastern Genoa, easily accessible from our residences in Nervi. From here, diving centers organize daily transfers to Portofino, Camogli, and Cinque Terre. The boat journey, lasting 30-45 minutes, is already part of the experience: sailing along the Ligurian coast allows you to admire from a unique perspective the seaside villages and cliffs that you will then explore underwater.

From an equipment standpoint, in addition to standard diving gear, it is advisable to always bring a flashlight, useful for illuminating crevices and cavities even during daytime dives. An underwater camera allows you to capture the chromatic richness of Ligurian seabeds, particularly photogenic thanks to the contrast between dark rocks and the vivid colors of sponges and corals.

Costs range from 35-45 euros for a single guided dive to 60-80 euros for dives at the most prestigious sites like the Portofino Marine Protected Area. Full-day packages with two dives and lunch on board range from 90 to 120 euros, while certification courses start from 300-350 euros for the Open Water Diver.

It is essential to always check weather and sea conditions before planning an outing. The Ligurian Sea, while relatively sheltered, can present challenging conditions in case of storms or strong winds. Local diving centers are always updated on conditions and will be able to suggest the best alternatives if the sea is rough.

Those staying in Genoa and its surroundings have the privilege of experiencing diving as an authentic experience, not as a hit-and-run excursion. Proximity to sites allows you to plan multiple dives, to return to the most beautiful places, to build an intimate relationship with this sea that can be so generous with those who take the time to truly know it.

The sea of Genoa never stops amazing those who choose to explore it with tanks and fins. Every dive reveals new details, new angles, unexpected encounters. It is a sea that rewards patience and expertise, that reveals itself completely only to those who know how to look at it with the eyes of someone who respects it. If the call of the Ligurian depths is calling you, our residences await you to let you experience Genoa also from its most secret and fascinating side: the one that hides beneath the surface of the sea that made this city great.
