Cervo and Laigueglia: the baroque jewels of the Riviera di Ponente

Cervo and Laigueglia, two jewels of the Riviera di Ponente just an hour from Genoa: Ligurian Baroque, white beaches and fishing villages where time slows down between history and the sea.

There is a moment, on Ligurian Sundays, when the morning sun filters through the shutters and the mind begins to wander. Beyond the rooftops of Genoa’s historic center, beyond the church bells marking the hour, toward that stretch of the Riviera di Ponente that guards hidden treasures in the folds of the coast. Sunday has this power: it transforms the urge to move into a sweet, irresistible necessity.

Today that sensation takes us westward, where the coast changes face and tells different stories. Just over an hour from Genoa is enough to find yourself in a world made of pastel-colored houses clinging to the rock, baroque churches overlooking the sea, white beaches that seem straight out of a vintage postcard.

Cervo and Laigueglia: two gems set in that stretch of Riviera di Ponente that still knows how to amaze, two villages where baroque meets the sea and where every alley tells a story of fishermen and nobles, of music and traditions never lost.

Cervo: the village where baroque embraces the sea

Cervo appears suddenly, like a vision. The pastel-colored houses — antique pink, ochre yellow, sage green — climb the hillside in a perfect composition that seems designed by a painter. But it is nature itself that has drawn this masterpiece, stone after stone, century after century.

The beating heart of the village is the Church of San Giovanni Battista, one of the most spectacular examples of Ligurian baroque. The concave façade, a work of the masters Ponzello, plays with the light of the sea creating shadow plays that change with the hours. It is not merely architecture: it is theater. And not by chance, every summer, this church becomes the stage for the International Chamber Music Festival, when violin and piano notes blend with the sound of the waves.

But Cervo is not just its church. It is the maze of medieval caruggi that open onto sudden panoramic terraces. It is the Castello dei Clavesana, now an ethnographic museum, that tells the story of this fishing village turned refuge for artists. It is a walk along the walls, where time seems to slow down and every step reveals a new glimpse of the gulf.

The village still lives to the slow rhythm of the seasons. In summer it comes alive with tourists and concerts, but always maintains that ancient dignity that makes it special. Spring and autumn are perhaps the best times to visit it: fewer crowds, softer light, and that feeling of having a secret all to yourself.

Laigueglia: the discreet elegance of white sand

Just a few kilometers from Cervo, Laigueglia offers a different but complementary face of the Riviera di Ponente. Here the sea reaches directly to the center of the town, and the colorful houses are mirrored in the crystalline water of one of the most beautiful beaches in western Liguria.

The beach of Laigueglia is a small miracle: white and fine sand, crystal-clear water, and that gently sloping seabed that allows even inexperienced swimmers to enjoy the Ligurian sea. But Laigueglia is more than just a beach. The historic center, gathered around the parish church of San Matteo with its distinctive majolica dome, preserves the intact charm of a fishing village that has managed to evolve without losing its soul.

Via Roma, the main artery of the village, is a succession of ceramic shops, boutiques and historic cafés. Here time flows differently, marked by the tides and the sound of the church bells. In the evening, when swimmers leave and the village returns to its residents, Laigueglia reveals its most authentic character: that of a community still living off the sea and its traditions.

The waterfront, recently renovated, offers a pleasant walk even during the winter season. The colors of the houses – from canary yellow to salmon pink, from water green to brick red – create a kaleidoscope reflected in the water, especially at sunset when the light becomes golden.

The journey: from the Superb city to the jewels of Ponente

Leaving Genoa to reach Cervo and Laigueglia means undertaking a journey through the history of Liguria. By car, the A10 motorway takes you in just over an hour to the Imperia Est exit, from which it takes just a few minutes to reach both villages. The train is a valid alternative: from Brignole or Principe station, regional trains connect Genoa with Alassio, from which a short bus trip leads to the destination.

It’s best to leave early in the morning, when the light is most beautiful and the villages are not yet crowded. The car journey offers spectacular views: once you pass Savona, the coast becomes wilder and the villages appear like nativity scenes set in the rock.

For those who choose the train, the journey becomes part of the experience: the trains run right along the sea, offering views that change with every curve. It’s a slower but also more poetic way to reach your destination, perfect for those who want to start their trip from the journey itself.

A perfect day between history and sea

The ideal itinerary begins in Cervo, best reached in late morning when the light enhances the colors of the houses and the church of San Giovanni Battista stands luminous against the sky. A walk through the carruggi, a visit to the Castello dei Clavesana, and then the spectacle of the baroque facade overlooking the sea.

Lunch can be an opportunity to taste the Ligurian cuisine from Ponente: pansotti with walnut sauce, Taggiasca olives, blue fish prepared according to ancient recipes. Small trattorias hidden in the carruggi offer genuine dishes at reasonable prices.

The afternoon is perfect for Laigueglia: a swim in crystal-clear waters (weather permitting), a walk through the historic center, perhaps an ice cream while sitting on the waterfront bench watching the sun slowly descend toward the horizon. Laigueglia has this gift: it manages to slow down time, to make every moment feel fuller.

In the evening, before returning to Genoa, it’s worth heading up toward the villages of the Imperia hinterland for one last look at the sea from above. The coast unfolds in all its splendor, with Cervo and Laigueglia shining like jewels set in a blue diadem.

The secret worth the journey

There is a moment in Cervo that few tourists know about. At dawn, when the village is still asleep and only fishermen are preparing for the morning catch, the facade of the church of San Giovanni Battista lights up with a particular glow. It’s the hour when the first rays of the sun strike the concave surfaces of Ligurian baroque, creating a play of light and shadow that seems to make the stone dance.

In that moment, sitting on the steps of the church with a steaming cappuccino from the local bar, you understand why Cervo has become a refuge for artists and musicians. It’s not just the beauty of the place: it’s that profound peace that arises from the perfect harmony between man and nature, between history and the present.

This is the true treasure of Cervo and Laigueglia: the ability to restore a sense of lost time, to remind us that beauty is never rushed and that the most precious moments are often the quietest ones.
